The brief from these clients is for a home that is low in energy and water use, while being comfortable to live in. They do not want any air-conditioning in the house, so we have designed the floor plan to draw air through the house between shaded and sunny courtyards, depending on the time of day. Besides the cross ventilation, we have also designed floor to ceiling windows to give the users the flexibility of opening upper or lower windows to release the warm air above and draw in the lower, cooler air. We have balanced the glazing with heavy walls for thermal massing, and orientated the rooms for maximum solar benefit or shading. We are currently studying the effects of the sun at various times of day and year, to better understand the design. We are also investigating solar energy, hot water and underfloor heating options.
