New Entertainment Area around an existing pool

Builder: David Bubb, DJ Building and Construction

The existing pool was surrounded by a narrow tiled strip with a hedge between the pool and the sheer 5m drop to the garden beyond. The client wanted an entertainment area that would not only extend the existing pool surround, but also create an opportunity to experience the leafy garden beyond, which was inaccessible at the time.

The required accommodation was a “sunning” area, a dining space and an outdoor BBQ kitchen. The style of the structure was to blend the simple, heavy style of the house with the woody surrounds.

The premise of the design was to make this link of solid concrete and leafy greenery through the use of a layer of timber structure that mimics the tree trunks and branches that form the backdrop to the pool area. In order to retain a perforated structural approach, two open-sided pavilions were created, allowing the greenery to remain visible across the pool. The space underneath allowed a sunken lounge for a cosier seating area, while the BBQ kitchen was nestled in the corner, edged with planter boxes. Where screening was required from the driveway, it was lined with seating and planters to mirror the greenery of the surrounds. The timber structure of the pavilions continue the rhythm of the trees beyond.
